Steve Fullmer, Walking Mudfish c.1980s, Stoneware, Various dimensions

Estimate $1000 – 1500

American-born, Nelson-based ceramicist Steve Fullmer (b. 1946) is known for his inventive, often whimsical sculptural forms that push the expressive possibilities of clay. Trained in California and settled in Aotearoa New Zealand since the mid-1970s, Fullmer has spent decades exploring the plasticity of earthenware through stretching, tearing and hand-modelling processes. His walking fish forms exemplify his distinctive humour and are among his most well-known forms.

Gaston De Vel, Shot Over River, 1972, oil on canvas, 680 x 570mm (framed)

Gaston De Vel, Shot Over River, 1972, oil on canvas, 680 x 570mm (framed)

Estimate $800 - $1200

Belgian-born and European-trained, Gaston De Vel brought a rare direct link to classical and Impressionist traditions when he arrived in New Zealand. A graduate of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts, he studied under Alfred Bastien, who had worked alongside Claude Monet and John Singer Sargent. De Vel offered New Zealand audiences and younger painters a vivid sense of Impressionism’s handling of light, colour and atmosphere.  He produced his paintings outside – en plein air.  De Vel’s landscapes were admired for their freshness, and his influence was recognised with the Kelliher Art Prize in 1969. His rendering of Shot Over river from the early 1970s is highly characteristic of the lively paint handling that he became well known for.

Joanna Braithwaite, Monkey Puzzle, Oil on canvas, 13950 x 2300mm (unframed)

Estimate $13,000 - $15000

In Joanna Braithwaite’s ‘menagerie’ paintings, monkeys operate as near-human surrogates. A key moment for the artist was visiting a New South Wales sanctuary for primates who have had previous lives in human environments. The slippage she senses between the animal world and human is highly evident such examples.  Monkey Puzzle can be contextualised by its close contemporary, Little Monkey, 1997, at Christchurch Art Gallery.

Toss Woollaston, Brown acre (Mt. Campbell) (From Riwaka), 1990, Watercolour on paper. 450 x 525mm (framed)

Estimate $8000 – 10,000

For Toss Woollaston, watercolour was “a rapid medium for striking quickly – while the iron is hot, so to speak – and so I like it best in summer, when what is put down dries at once and can take more, almost as fast as I can think” (Barnett, 1991, p.77). The Riwaka–Motueka landscape also offered him a satisfying terrain of orchards, hills, light and weather that he could explore through colour, structure and gesture.

 Estimate $2500 – 35000

Jervis Bay, New South Wales, has been a family vacation spot for the artist Euan MacLeod.  Heavily textured surfaces and vigorous brushstrokes characterise his confident, deft approach to outdoor painting. This rapid painting gives a sense of both phantom figures and the immediacy of observed realities on a sunny beach.  Based in Australia, Macleod’s work gains sustenance from the landscapes of both his birthplace and his adopted home, and he has exhibited consistently in New Zealand and Australia throughout his career.

Jane Evans, In Heaven as on Earth, 1996, Lithograph. 47/115, 670 x 540mm (framed)

Estimate $500- $1000

A whimsical scene by Jane Evans, a key figure in the Nelson art scene. Here, the airborne figures suggest a spiritual realm, though one in red—wearing a pointed hat—recalls a jester or clown. Evans developed an exuberant circus series in the 1980s after a touring circusvisited Nelson, and that sense of play and energy returns here. The dreamy, floating figures, echoing one of her favoured European artists, Marc Chagall, re-emerge in this joyful vision

This is an exclusive experience for a group of up to 6 people. You will visit places that visitors normally cannot get to, the bell tower, the gallery, the crypt. You can try on a robe, see where processional crosses and the Bishop’s staff, are stored, sit in the Bishop’s chair (called a cathedra) and hear a little history of the flags on the cathedral wall – at least one is World War 1 vintage.

You will be invited to have a turn ringing the bells after a demonstration by a bellringer. The bells are technically chimes but this means that one person can ring all 8 bells by pulling ropes towards them.

Dean (Rev Dr Graham O’Brien) will lead the tour, depending on the time you opt to go. He is very approachable and informative. You will also have morning tea and a chance to chat with him about any of your questions.
