Janet Bathgate, born in Nelson, trained at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1974.  Her early and sustained focus was printmaking, before expanding into mixed media, drawing, and design-based public work. Her imagery often references something recognisable, but which largely resists identification.  Bathgate won the Award of Distinction at Changing Threads in 2022 for her work Microphyllum anxietaceae.
