Free Isn’t Free.

The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū is free to enter, but it’s not free to run.
Every light turned on, every exhibition opened, every school visit hosted is made possible by people like you.

We’re a charitable trust, not a fully funded organisation. While local council funding helps, it only covers part of what it takes to operate. The rest comes from community generosity, from those who believe Nelson deserves a place where art, learning, and connection are free for everyone.

More than 130 years ago, Bishop Andrew Suter and his wife Amelia left Nelson a remarkable gift; not just an art gallery, but a legacy of generosity and community spirit that continues today. Every donation, large or small, honours that legacy and helps keep The Suter truly belonging to its community.

Your donation pays for:

  • Power, lighting, and gallery maintenance

  • Local and national exhibitions

  • Artist talks and public programmes

  • Free school visits and education resources

  • Staff who make the experience special every day

Your gift, no matter the size, keeps the doors open and the lights on.
