We Are Young: Childhood in Photography

  • The Suter Art Gallery 208 Bridge Street Nelson, 7010 New Zealand (map)

A selection of striking photographs of tamariki (children) in Aotearoa from the late 19th century to the 21st century. Included in the line-up of New Zealand photographers are: Gary Blackman, Marti Friedlander, Ans Westra, Laurence Aberhart, Athol McCredie, Anne Noble, Evelyn Macpherson, Bruce Connew, Russ Flatt, Edith Amituanai and Tia Ranginui.

We Are Young presents imagery ranging from studio photographs and street photography to collaborative contemporary portraiture. Many of the photographers have pointed their cameras at whanau (family), where photographer-subject dynamics can offer a strong psychological dimension. Amidst shifting ethics around the use of photography, We Are Young offers insight into how the young have been portrayed and engaged with by photographers across different cultural moments.
