The Art and Science of Upcycling: How The Suter Art Gallery Turns Waste into Wonder

Have you ever wondered what happens to the banners that are used for advertising or information at big events, such as exhibitions, festivals, or concerts? Do they end up in the landfill, adding to the growing problem of waste and pollution? Or do they get a second chance to shine and serve a new purpose?

At The Suter Art Gallery, we believe in the art and science of upcycling. Upcycling is the process of transforming old or unwanted materials into something new and useful, often with a higher value or quality than the original. Upcycling is not only a creative and innovative way to reuse resources, but also a sustainable and environmentally friendly practice that reduces waste and saves energy.

That’s why we have partnered with The Green Collective, a local Nelson business that produces our unique and stylish upcycled tote bags, made from recycled PVC exhibition banners that were used for our previous exhibitions. The Green Collective is a social enterprise that aims to create products for eco-friendly lifestyles. They combine art and design into everyday items, such as dishcloths, bags, and hankies. They also reinvent daily-use items into sustainable products that reduce single-use consumption.

These tote bags are not only beautiful and practical, but also good for the planet. They are made from durable and waterproof materials that can withstand wear and tear. They are also easy to clean and maintain, as they can be wiped with a damp cloth or washed in cold water.

Each tote bag is different and has its own story to tell. The banners feature various designs and colours that reflect the themes and messages of the exhibitions they came from. Some of the exhibitions that led to the creation of the upcycled tote bags are:

  • Summer at The Suter: A celebration of summer in Nelson, showcasing three exhibitions running over the summer – Bird in Space, Darryl Frost: Inner Peace, and Place Holder. These exhibitions were sponsored by leading investment and advisory group, Jarden, a long-standing partner of The Suter Art Gallery who actively supports art and culture in New Zealand.

  • Memento Moa: Artist Gary Baseman creates a mythical land of hybrid creatures, exploring themes of migration, memory, and mortality. This exhibition was kindly sponsored by NBS, a local banking service that is owned by its clients and committed to its communities. NBS also supports The Suter by sponsoring some of our educational programmes, helping to inspire and engage learners of all ages!
