Our vision is reflected in the Maori name given to The Suter:

‘Te Aratoi o Whakatu’

Art is the Pathway for Whakatu – Nelson’

The Suter was established in 1898 by Amelia Suter as a memorial to her husband Bishop Andrew Suter.  It is the third oldest art museum in New Zealand.

The Suter holds a nationally significant collection of art and presents a dynamic program of exhibitions, events and education services.

Samoa relief art auction

An art exhibition, silent auction and fundraising event at The Suter has raised more than $5000 for tsunami relief in Samoa. Le Fetu began on November 9 and culminated with an event on Saturday 14 that featured traditional Samoan singing and dancing.

New Acquisitions

While we are sad to see The Maui Dynasty: The Fifth Goodman Suter Contemporary Art Project dismantled and individual pieces dispatched to all corners of the country, we are pleased to announce that one of these art works has not been sent home!
