Fire and Earth: An Exploration of Ceramic Art in the Top of the South
/The Suter Art Gallery is delighted to present Fire and Earth: Contemporary Ceramics from the Top of The South, a biennale exhibition that displays the work of 29 ceramic artists from Te Tau Ihu (the Top of the South Island).
Fire and Earth encompasses a spectrum of styles and techniques, from utilitarian pottery to artistic forms, from conventional to avant-garde, from subdued to vibrant. The exhibition examines how ceramic artists articulate their concepts, sentiments and narratives through clay, fire and glaze, and how they adapt to the constraints and possibilities of this primordial and organic medium.
Katie Gold, Which Shoes Shall I Choose?, Slip cast clay and glaze: 18 pairs
The exhibition is curated by Andrea du Chatenier, a distinguished ceramicist from Whanganui, who also contributes a piece to the exhibition. Andrea is a former sculptor who transitioned to clay as her main medium, and she employs it in unexpected and enchanting ways. She has exhibited extensively in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally and has received numerous awards and residencies.
Fire and Earth is a celebration of the ingenuity and diversity of ceramic art in our region and a homage to the proficiency and enthusiasm of the artists. The exhibition is generously supported by Jarden, a long-time supporter of The Suter Art Gallery and its various exhibitions.
