The opportunity
The Suter is seeking a motivated curator to join our team as we advance the growth and reputation of the Gallery in its second century of existence.
Reporting to the Director, the Curator and Collection Manager will initiate, research, develop and deliver exhibitions and other projects as well as having input into the development of the Gallery’s collection. It is expected that the Curator and Collection Manager will be capable of conceptualising and realizing exhibitions that explore emerging trends and contemporary art practice as well as exhibitions that build on the historical art from the collection and other sources.
In this role, you will have contact with artists, lenders, guest curators, Ko Te Pouaranga, donors, Friends of The Suter and the public. You will be able to articulate your curatorial vision to a variety of audiences through your interpretative writing, public talks and other means.
You will need to be creative, enthusiastic and have close attention to detail, as part of the role is managing the collection including cataloguing, storage and records maintenance.
The Suter has a small staff so you will be prepared to be practically involved with the articulation of exhibitions, collection care, public programmes and other events.
Your background
Ideally, you will have a tertiary qualification in visual arts or art history and possibly museum or curatorial studies and/or relevant experience. A current driver’s licence would be advantageous.
You will be sensitive to cultural issues and have a clear understanding of the principles and practice of Te Tiriti o Waitangi as they apply to museums.
