Wearable Art: Our Limited-Edition African City Silk Scarf

We’re excited to share one of the most popular items to arrive in The Suter Store this season: a limited-edition silk scarf created in collaboration with LoveSilk and inspired by John Weeks’ painting African City from The Suter’s own collection.

The design draws directly from Weeks’ modernist composition, bringing its warm ochres, deep blues, and architectural shapes onto soft, lightweight silk. At 65cm x 65cm with hand-rolled edges, it’s a versatile piece — easy to wear, gift, or frame.

John Weeks was a key figure in Aotearoa’s early modernist movement, and seeing African City reimagined in this format offers a fresh way to enjoy a classic artwork. It’s been a hit in the store already, and because the scarves are limited edition, they won’t be around for long.

If you’re looking for something unique for Christmas — or simply want a beautiful accessory with a local story behind it — the African City scarf is a lovely option.

Available now at The Suter Store.

About African City by John Weeks

John Weeks (1886-1965) was a well known teacher at Elam Art School in Auckland. Before he took up teaching, he had traveled and worked in Europe, including in the Parisian teaching academy of Salon Cubist artist Andre Lhote. Weeks also spent around 15 months in North Africa, a region he described as 'Africa'. He made many geometricised compositions based on his field studies in the towns and cities of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. He rarely dated his paintings but is likely to have been one of New Zealand's first abstractionists.
