Renowned photographer, publisher, and environmentalist Craig Potton has been a driving force behind the arts scene in Nelson for decades. His mother, Rhoda, was an avid art lover and volunteer at The Suter, and it was through her that Craig developed a lifelong passion for galleries and art.
Potton's stunning photography has captured the beauty of New Zealand's landscapes, wildlife, and people. His work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. The Craig Potton Gallery, located on Hardy Street in Nelson, has long been a hub for art enthusiasts, offering a curated selection of his own work as well as that of other talented artists.
The Potton family's connection to The Suter goes beyond their involvement in the gallery named after them. The family owned a significant collection of New Zealand art, and several works were generously gifted to The Suter in Rhoda's memory. Additionally, a substantial financial contribution helped fund the redevelopment of The Suter between 2014 and 2016, ensuring the gallery's continued success.
Craig Potton's commitment to the arts extends beyond his role as a renowned photographer. His leadership as the Chair of the Bishop Suter Trust from 2008 to 2023 showcased his dedication to supporting local artists and preserving cultural heritage. His contributions to photography and conservation were formally acknowledged with the prestigious appointment of a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2013.
