Planted

  • The Suter Art Gallery 208 Bridge Street Nelson, 7010 New Zealand (map)

Planted explores the role of plant life as a recurring expressive motif in art, from 19th-century works to recent photography, film, sculpture, and painting.

This botanical theme draws on artworks drawn from The Suter’s collection and contemporary artworks from other collections. Whether cultivated by human hands or growing wild, plants are deeply embedded in our existence.  They sustain us and are planted in our minds, imaginative thought, visual expressions, language, and our cultural thinking at large. On this plant planet of ours these organic entities turn the energy of the sun into fuel, providing material for tools, clothing, shelter and heat, medicine for illness, and food for living creatures, including humans.
