Pūrākau: Weaving Māori Myths Into Modern Stories

  • The Suter Art Gallery 208 Bridge Street Nelson, 7010 New Zealand (map)

60 MIN | PWYC

Whiti Hereaka (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Te Arawa) and Nic Low (Kāi Tahu) have written two remarkable books that tell ancient Māori stories in fresh and compelling ways.

In this year’s winner of the Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction, Kurangaituku, Hereaka flips perspectives on a well-known tale. In Uprising: Walking the Southern Alps of New Zealand, Low uses tramping and climbing adventures to bring the past to life.
