Artist statement:
This work has been made as a direct response to the Contemplation Space. Having visited the gallery, I was really taken with the concept, and it is well suited to my overall artistic vision.
The abstract minimalists used repetition to create simplicity, order and harmony. I have repeated a theme across three paintings with the intention to introduce a sense of calm into the Contemplation Space. I believe that what matters the most, is how a painting feels, so this is what guides me when I am creating my art. It’s an intuitive process and I try to not think too hard about it. My work is deliberately sparse because I like to eliminate unnecessary clutter which can feel like noise and distraction.
I use spaces as an active ingredient within the paintings. The areas of high activity (in this case in the cut-out channel) are offset by, or contrasted with, the larger plain surfaces which are deliberately left empty. My intention is to create a dynamic energy with these two different elements working together. Similarly, there is significant space around each painting on the gallery walls. These areas are often over-looked, but they are purposely created to enhance the whole experience of looking at the artworks.
Not surprisingly my main influences are artists from the abstract minimalist movement, such as Donald Judd and Agnes Martin and artists associated with the St Ives school including Patrick Heron and Ben Nicholson. I am also drawn to modernist architecture especially the work of Japanese architect Tadao Ando. I hope that these paintings may encourage people to take some time out of their busy lives and offer them a moment of contemplation.
Stan Bowski is based in Nelson. He is represented by Quiet Dog Gallery and is currently working towards a solo exhibition with PG Gallery in Christchurch in May.
