This solo exhibition focuses on Karl Maughan’s early practice, presenting key works made between 1987 and 1998. Known for his rich garden paintings, Maughan began to develop the distinctive approach to colour, composition, and spatial strategies that now defines his work, during this period. Drawn from both public and private collections, the works in this exhibition reveal early explorations of the motifs and techniques that have become central to his practice. Together, they offer a compelling glimpse into the development of one of Aotearoa’s most recognisable painters.
