This collection of nearly 400 letters exchanged between renowned painter Colin McCahon and influential Christchurch librarian and patron of the arts, Ron O’Reilly, spans from 1944 to 1981. Simpson’s talk, based on his book research, will allow us a rare glimpse into the depth of their friendship and their lives.
Peter Simpson, a distinguished author, editor, and former Associate Professor of English at the University of Auckland, will give a rich presentation of images, selected annotations and sketches within the extraordinary cache of letters. A specialist on Colin McCahon’s art, he brings us a deeper understanding of McCahon’s artistic journey and O’Reilly’s significant contributions to New Zealand’s cultural heritage as a staunch advocate of New Zealand contemporary art.
