The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū’s opening suite of exhibitions: Milk and Honey, Promised Land, and Exodus, explore the mythmaking involved in forging the history and vision of our country and Nelson as a region.

The artists in Exodus are performing an ‘exodus’ or departure from the Nationalist and Regionalist modes of creating and understanding art that many artists from the previous generations sought to forge. Their artworks don’t seek to passively comfort or create a uniquely ‘New Zealand art’ – instead they confront the viewer with anxious, disturbing, fascinating and hypnotic insights into our world.
