Papa Tongarewa.
The U3A 'Suterble Art Group' and The Suter Art Gallery have won a Dynamic Community Learning
Award which was presented at the launch of Adult Learners Week, 8 September 2008.
The award recognises innovative adult and community education. The Suter's Curator, Anna-Marie
White, who worked with the group, nominated the Nelson U3A Suterble's exhibition project
Colours, Shapes and Images of a Lifetime 1914-2007 for the award. Eleven U3A members
spent over a year on this project.
They learnt
about the processes that go into planning and researching an exhibition, culminating in an actual
exhibition and associated public talks. The exhibition brought together art works from the Suter’s
art collection that date from the life span of the oldest current participant in the Nelson branch
of U3A.
A panel of
eight assessors considered entries from throughout New Zealand, congratulating the Suter on its
“ongoing, highly effective work.” Joanna Innes Walker, convenor of the U3A ‘Suterables’, Caryll
Brooker, Secretary of Nelson U3A and Anna-Marie White received the award at a special event at Te
Papa, Wellington 8th September on behalf of the group.
