COLOURS, SHAPES AND IMAGES OF A LIFETIME
31 May - 6 July 2008
Curated by The Suterable Art Group of Nelson U3A
The eldest participant in the Nelson U3A is 92 and this
exhibition is a display of art work created during the years of such a lifetime. It tries
to evoke a backdrop of colours, forms and ideas which reflected and often challenged the norms of
our day. Memories do not come in date order so our exhibition is a kaleidoscope of
images which might come to mind at random –
Remembered
delights
Art that once
shocked and perhaps affronted
Complex
puzzles
Tactile
experiences
-all reflecting and shaping the culture of
the time, and now preserved in The Suter Art Gallery collection.
Colours, Shapes and
Images of a Lifetime has been curated by The
Suterable Art Group of Nelson U3A. U3A originated in France in the mid-seventies and has
recently celebrated its tenth year in New Zealand. It is a university in the original
sense of the word – a group of people learning for its own sake and based on the idea of a
community seeking greater understanding of life. Following the guiding principle of
the U3A “no teachers and no students – all are equal members” – every participant has contributed
in the development of this exhibition.
