Samoa relief art auction

An art exhibition, silent auction and fundraising event at The Suter has raised more than $5000 for tsunami relief in Samoa.

Le Fetu began on November 9 and culminated with an event on Saturday that featured traditional Samoan singing and dancing. Works sold through the auction included paintings by Mark Fa’avae, Robin Slow and Geoff Noble, as well as carved and sculpted works by Brian Flintoff and Tim Wraight.

The Suter’s director, Julie Catchpole is pleased with the outcome. ‘‘I think it’s very positive given that it was only a week-long show,’’ she says. ‘‘It was a really heartening community response.’’ Julie was particularly impressed by the number of artists who got involved after reading about it in local media, including The Leader, ‘‘The space allocated for the exhibition was filled up completely,’’ she says.
